What this site keeps.
This site keeps a record of visits, for its own use. A line at the foot of each page says so. It records which pages were read, when, for how long, the page you came from, and roughly where you are. You can stop it for your browser at any time, and what was kept from your browser is deleted when you do. The records stay on this site's own server and are not sold.
What is recorded
- A random identifier in a cookie, for this site. It is not your name, and a cookie set by this site cannot be read by another site.
- Which pages you opened here, when, and how many seconds each was on screen.
- The site or search you came from, as a place: the name of the site, without the page or whatever came after the question mark. A move from one of this site's pages to another is not written as where you came from.
- The address your connection comes from. The site is told which country that is by Cloudflare, which carries this site's traffic, and works out nothing finer than the country.
- The browser and device description your browser sends with every request.
- If you opt out, that you did, and when.
What it is for
To run the events and the businesses behind this site, and to follow up with people who get in touch. When someone writes about an event or a trip, the record shows what they have already read, so the answer can start from there. It is not used to build an advertising profile, and it is not sold, rented or traded.
How long it is kept
The address your connection comes from is cleared from the record after 90 days. The rest of a visit record is deleted 12 months after the visit. The count of page opens from people who opted out has nobody attached to it and is kept as a running total.
Who can see it
The site owner and staff, in this site's own admin screens. It is there to run the events and to know who is asking before answering. It is not sent to an advertising network.
What this site does not do
- No Google Analytics, no advertising pixels, no trackers from anyone else. The page reaches you through Cloudflare, which carries this site's traffic; the site's own records stay on its own server.
- No mouse tracking, no scroll heatmaps, no keystrokes, and nothing typed into a form unless you press send.
- Nothing about what you do on other websites.
Stop recording my visits
On this browser, visits are being recorded.
Pressing it sets a cookie that says no, deletes what has been kept from this browser so far, and stops the record from then on. It stays that way for a year, or until you clear your cookies, and you can come back here and turn it on again.
Pressing OK on the line at the foot of a page hides that line; it does not change what is recorded. This section does.
Messages and tickets
Send a message and you hand over a name, an email and what you wrote, so it can be answered. That is kept with the conversation, and you can ask for it to be deleted. Buy a ticket and Stripe takes the payment: your card details go to Stripe, not to this site. This site is told that a payment went through, for how much, and the name and email on it. A purchase is a business record, and tax rules require a business to keep those for six years.
A copy, or gone
Write to [email protected] or message from the event page, and you can have a copy of what is held about you, or have it deleted. If you are not happy with the answer, you can take it to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Who holds it
This site is run by Abe Thiessen, Ontario, Canada, and the records sit on a server run for him. Questions about any of this go to [email protected].
